Karate Club – Advisor Mr. Houde
Karate club will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Gym from 3-4 and will require students to find their own mode of transportation home.  This club is concerned with Karate-do (the Way of Karate) and incorporates both a physical and philosophical approach.  While attendance at all practices is not a strict requirement, the student’s progress is dependent on practicing as regularly as possible.  Students will need to purchase their own clothing for practice.  This consists of a uniform (approximately $28) and sparring gloves (approx. $27—these will be purchased after the student has reached a more advanced level). With each belt test, the student will also need to purchase a belt (approx. $10).  Students who attend practice regularly can expect to be tested 2-3 times per school year.  Successful testing results in attainment of higher rank and change in belt color.  Some benefits of Karate include regular exercise, increased flexibility, increased self-defense ability, and improved coordination, balance, and physical self-awareness.

Model UN – Advisor Mr. Driscoll
North Country Model United Nations is a three day conference in March where over 500 of the best students in the North Country and Vermont engage one another in spirited debate to solve current world problems. The committees are the same as the actual United Nations and the issues chosen are either current world problems or ongoing issues from around the world. Committees include: Human Rights Council, International Court of Justice, Political Committee, Legal Committee, Security Council, Economic and Social Councils and the African Union.  At the conference, delegates will work with other members of their committees to draft working papers and resolutions seeking to solve the problems relating to each issue. As part of the process delegates may: make speeches, answer questions for other delegates (written or oral), engage in informal conferences with other delegates (caucusing), and work with other delegates to blend various approaches into working papers and resolutions to solve the problems at hand in each committee. These resolutions are then voted upon by each committee and then by the entire Model UN at the final general session.
