Van Hovenburgh and Whiteface Mountain. These students have been studying simple machines and forces such as gravity.
We wanted to see how simple machines such as wheels and axles, pulleys, wedges, inclined planes, screws, and levers can be used to create complex machines to do important, valuable work. ORDA staff were very helpful and provided an opportunity for a gondola ride at Whiteface. The group was able to cheer freestyle aerialists from around the world as they competed in the Nature Valley Freestyle World Cup Competition at Mt. Van Hovenburgh.
We found that there was machinery at both sites involving the concepts we had been studying. It was wonderful to see these snow sports outside of the classroom and realize that they involved the same forces and machines we have been studying inside the classroom!
